Thoughts on Our New President from my 12 year old

My son is such a gift. Just thought I'd share...

On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, we had a new President sworn into office. This was no ordinary inauguration. It was the inauguration of the United States of America’s first African American President, Barack Hussein Obama. Some cried, some laughed, some danced, some sang. Most all of America, black and white, rejoiced on that glorious day. It was the dawn of a new America, an America of change and opportunity. This means something for all of us. It opens up doors that that were seemingly forever shut by the circumstances of society. But now, America has changed.

In our lives, when we were younger and even now, we are told that we can be anything we want to be, “even President”. Though the statement was true then, it can now be recognized as a reality. Never would our parents and grandparents have thought that we would see a man of color take an oath and step into the highest governmental office an American could have. Barack Obama has made history, and will forever be known to have been the first African American President ever.

As I said, Barack Obama has made history; history that we were a part of. We will one day be able to tell our children and our children’s children that we were watching when the first black President said “So help me God.” We can say that we witnessed that in our lifetime. I wish Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could’ve lived to see his dream fulfilled. President Obama has affected many lives. He has inspired the hearts of millions to achieve what was once out of reach. And he has shown to never say never, that the “impossible” is closer than you may think.

Dr. King talked about a dream. He talked about equality, change, and hope for a better tomorrow. This is the dream Dr. King lived and died for. I’m sure he looks upon this nation with pride from paradise. Dr. King probably never even imagined this day would come. Barack Obama had God on his side. There’s no way a black man whose middle name is Hussein gets in the White House without God. Barack Obama was meant for the Presidency from the start.
